[ How sweet. ]
I'll be generous and say I'd rather be stuck with you than Irvine. [ But not Squall, Rinoa, Selphie, or Zell. Okay, maybe Selphie and Zell. It's a strange situation. ]

[ Smirking on the other end. Still. ]
And it's okay. I think you're ideal, too.

[ She doesn't know how to phrase it. She doesn't like him, she doesn't dislike him, she... it's all so mixed up. He does things she hates, but she's never hated him. She always followed him, scolded him, cared about him. Every day more memories come back and some of them tear at her. She hadn't even remembered stepping between him and Squall when they fought. It would be a lie to say that something so trivial wasn't something she held dear to her.
Quistis doesn't want to think about any of it or what it may mean. Thankfully, his words grant her wish and snap her out of it. ]
That's... [ It's a lot to wrap her mind around. He's clearly just messing with her. It doesn't even occur to her that his phrasing implies that he thought she was talking about him. ] That's not appropriate to discuss right now. We can talk later. [ But she's still not hanging up. Either he'll have to take initiative or say something that makes her do it. It shouldn't be too hard, considering. ]

[ Which, to him, is the biggest compliment ever coming from her. ]
So-- you were sayin'? You've never... never what? Never hated me?

I was devastated when I was told that you'd been executed. [ Is what she manages to finally admit to. The first and only time. Back then, she'd tried to hold it together, be the strong one in the group -- and eventually she'd partially taken it out on Rinoa. Let her feelings twist and turn and contort into something they shouldn't have.
And she hesitates, wondering if she could get away with saying nothing. Instead, she decides honesty is the best policy... while knowing it very probably isn't. ]
I'm afraid you... misunderstood what I was saying. The man I am currently involved with is perhaps my ideal match. [ And then she connects the dots. Did he... kind of like her? Maybe? No, it was just a response to the situation. Assuming it wasn't a joke meant to get her riled up, it was nothing more than... well, she didn't know. She didn't know and she doesn't want to think on it and... she really should have hung up again, shouldn't she? ]

Seifer opens his mouth to speak at the same time she begins, and he goes quiet again when he hears the beginning of what seems like hesitation. And then it hits him; she's seeing someone, as in dating. How is he supposed to feel about this? The mix of emotions is like a mixed bag; Seifer refuses to put his hand into that cookie jar, not when he knows he's only going to end up pulling out crumbs.
Disappointment is the biggest factor here. A hint of confusion, realization, humiliation. Anger.
But why? Why anger? He shouldn't care - he doesn't!
And yet the silence drags. And drags. And drags, up until the point of where she might think he's either hung up or that he can't find the words at all in how to respond to her and this newly bit of revealed information. ]
... I bet. Have fun with that then.

It's like a spot on the sun. You can't focus because by the time you do you're completely enveloped by the rest of it. Although perhaps if you really tried you'd catch it... ]
What is that su--[ And she is cut off by being hung up on. It's a feeling she isn't particularly fond of, she decides. She doesn't understand what just happened, but she suspects it all ties in to his pride for some reason or another. Likely he wanted to come up with some awful retort but the fact that he didn't know who she was seeing stopped him from being specific. That had to be it. She allows the phone's weight to settle in her hand for a moment, staring down at the receiver before she finally sets it back down, on the hook. Perhaps it would have been better if she hadn't called back. ]
